SALE Of Merchant City Mural Site Agreed For Mixed-Use Development

20 March, 2021 | News

THE sale of a prominent Merchant City site to a developer has been confirmed.

Glasgow City Council’s subsidiary company City Property has sold land at Ingram Street to Artisan Real Estate Ltd.

The site, between Candleriggs and Albion Street, is currently a car park and features an iconic wildlife mural on a gable wall.

City property state: “The development will incorporate residential on the upper floors with commercial units on the ground floor.”

No further details have been released.

Marketing material issued last year stated: “A mixed-use development is sought for the site to maintain the vitality and improve vibrancy of this district of the city centre.

“High quality contemporary and complementary architecture will be essential given the rich townscape character of the Merchant City.”

Merchant City and Trongate Community Council have been campaigning for the site to become a park. An application made in 2018 for a hotel was later withdrawn.

Artisan is behind two hotel developments in Glasgow — one under construction at the Custom House and another proposed for St Vincent Street.
