29 September, 2022 | Active Travel, Public Realm

WORK on a major project to make the streetscape on Byres Road more people-friendly could start early next year.

The latest Glasgow City Council update regarding the £9million West End scheme states: “A package of public realm improvement works at Byres Road is scheduled for delivery.

“The project will see the reallocation of road space to facilitate the widening and upgrading of footways as well as the provision of step-free crossings at side streets and the introduction of protected cycle infrastructure to provide a safe and continuous route between Great Western Road and Partick Cross.

The changes will be carried out in two phases — the first will involve Byres Road South (Partick Cross to University Avenue) and phase two will address Byres Road North (University Avenue to Great Western Road).

The update continues: “The council issued a tender for phase one in July 2022, and contract award is scheduled for November 2022 allowing a site start in January 2023.

“Presently, phase two of the works is programmed to commence in autumn 2024 upon the completion of phase one, with all works anticipated to be complete by mid-2026.”
