12 February, 2021 | Residential

CONSTRUCTION of 55 flats for social rent is starting at a prominent corner site at Anderston.

The JR Group is delivering the £9.3million car-free development on vacant land bounded by Breadalbane Street, Dover Street and Argyle Street for Glasgow West Housing Association (GWHA).

It is due for completion in the spring of 2023 and includes a commercial unit. Planning permission was granted in October 2018.

Joe Heaney, housing association chairperson, said “This has been a complex and challenging development project, and we are thankful for the ongoing support of the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and our local community, in reaching this important milestone.

“There is overwhelming demand for social housing in our area, and we are excited about the significant contribution these high-quality, energy-efficient homes will make towards our vision of shaping thriving communities.”

Councillor Kenny McLean, Glasgow City convener for neighbourhoods, housing and public Rrealm, said: “This is a very welcome development of socially-rented homes on a site that has been vacant for a considerable time.

“We were delighted to work with Glasgow West Housing Association on this project, one which will continue the regeneration of Anderston and provide high-quality new housing in a great location.”

Craig Whyte, commercial director for The JR Group, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with GWHA to break ground on this project.

“This is a substantial development which includes much-needed homes for Glasgow, so it is great to deliver these on behalf of the housing association, with the aim of creating a thriving new community.”
