VACANT NHS Headquarters Can Be Turned Into Rental Flats

17 November, 2022 | Residential

A PLAN to convert a prominent empty office building in central Glasgow into nearly 100 flats has been approved.

Permission was previously given for Dalian House, the former NHS Glasgow headquarters at Charing Cross, to be turned into 67 apartments for sale.

But a further application proposing to making the building into 92 flats for private rent has now been given the go-ahead by city planners.

The building on the corner of St Vincent Street and North Street, near the M8 motorway, has been unoccupied since 2010 when the NHS trust moved to a new facility at Gartnavel.

A design statement provided for planning officials explained: “The building is unlettable in its current condition because it is not compatible with current office requirements and, if left in its current condition, the building will become even more detrimental to the economy and surrounding area.

“There have been various option appraisals considered in recent years including proposals for offices, a hotel and student accommodation, however managed residential accommodation is now considered to be the most viable alternative use in the current market.

“Along with internal alterations, the proposals will include the refurbishment of all exterior elevations, new glazing and extensive landscaping to the front and rear of the building.”

There will be 17 studios, 58 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom units. (The previous plan was for five studios, 24 one-bedroom and 38 two-bedroom flats.)

A space will be provided for residents to gather and relax, with opportunities for home/co-working and relaxation/breakout activities and direct access to an external soft and hard landscaped area.

The existing 96-space basement car parking will be kept and there will also be one cycle space per flat.

Dalian House was built in 1989/90 and first housed Strathclyde Regional Council staff. It is named after a city in northern China with which Glasgow was twinned in 1987.
