SIXTY-Four Flats Proposed For Old Glasgow Theatre Site

17 April, 2021 | Residential

PLANS are being brought forward for residential development on the site of the former Coliseum Theatre in Laurieston.

Sixty-four apartments and a landscaped courtyard are proposed for the plot on Eglinton Street in a joint venture between New Gorbals Housing Association and Urban Union.

There will be 26 homes for sale, and 38 homes for social housing use, in four blocks, three of them with six floors and one with four floors.

Details released as part of community pre-application consultation state: “[The development] will also incorporate the community rooms that are currently hosted on the site, enhancing and enlarging the space, and creating an associated garden.

“The housing association seeks to develop a dense, city centre housing development which forms a key frontage for the Laurieston Transformational Area onto Eglinton Street, while maintaining the architectural and urban design quality achieved in the association’s earlier phases on Cumberland Street/Margaret Street, and Gorbals Street.

The Coliseum site is between the O2 Academy and Bridge Street subway station.

The theatre later became a cinema and then a bingo hall. It was knocked down following a fire in 2009.
