31 March, 2020 | Residential

DETAILED plans for a development of 84 flats and six commercial units at the site of a former Glasgow police station have been submitted to Glasgow City Council for approval.

The redundant Cranstonhill police office would be demolished and replaced with a six-storey block under the plan by Westpoint Homes.

The site is at a prominent location on Argyle Street at St Vincent Street and Finnieston Street, on the boundary of Anderston and Finnieston.

A planning application has now been submitted to Glasgow City Council for consideration.

There would be 20 one-bedroom, 63 two-bedroom and one three-bedroom apartment. The ground floor would have space for six retail and food and drink outlets. There would be 31 parking spaces.

A design statement included with the application explains: The site offers a fantastic opportunity to reinstate the urban fabric of this part of Argyle Street following on from the recently completed adjacent Sanctuary Housing Association development to the east.

“Creating new active retail street frontages at ground level will support the growing local business community in Finnieston.”

It continues: “The final design aims to create a contemporary tenement with a controlled elegance that responds thoughtfully to the context of the surrounding tenements and existing built form.”

Level one would comprise a mix of one and two-bedroom flats with private balcony space and private and shared gardens, on a south-facing deck over the parking area.

Levels two to four also comprise a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments with private balcony space.

One-bedroom flats on levels one to four are single aspect but are significantly enhanced with wide fully glazed frontage and private balcony with clear views down Argyle Street to the west and St Vincent Street to the east.

Levels five and six are set back 2.5 metres from the main building line and comprise two and three-bedroom penthouse apartments with private terraces.
