PERMISSION has been given for 71 social rent flats at the former Shawbridge Arcade site in Pollokshaws.

Planners have agreed that the Wheatley Group can develop eight apartment blocks of four and five floors with a mix of one and two-bedroom flats. Seven of the units will be suitable for wheelchair users.

Office accommodation for Glasgow Housing Association will also be provided at ground and first floor level of a focal point corner block.

A design statement included with the application explained that the aim is to create a new sense of place and ownership around Ashtree Road, Greenview Street and Toon Hoose Square.

Soft landscaping will be used to create a more pleasant streetscape and amenity spaces.

The shopping centre site was built in the 1970s and had become dilapidated and abandoned over a number of years.
