PERMISSION Given For Residential Makeover Of Old Kelvinbridge School

A PROPOSAL to convert a former Glasgow West End school into flats and build new apartments has been approved.

Councillors on Glasgow’s planning applications committee backed the plan by Kelvin Properties for the former Napiershall Street School.

Officials had recommended that approval permission be given.

The building, on the corner of Napiershall Street and North Woodside Road, Kelvinbridge, will be turned into 24 flats with the design including a single storey rooftop extension.

There will be 25 apartments in an L-shaped new-build block in the grounds.

A rooftop communal greenspace will be provided. Eighteen car parking spaces are proposed.

The school dates from the 1890s and closed in the 1980s. It has most recently been used by community groups.

A design statement included with the application explained: “The subject site provides a unique opportunity to deliver a dynamic development that will make a positive contribution to the ongoing densification of the area through the quality of its architecture and landscape design.”

It continued: “Historic photographs demonstrate the spatial and material quality once enjoyed within the central atrium space of the former school building.

“It is proposed to restore all original features where possible, with the former classrooms being converted to apartments.

“At the heart of the building the central atrium and stairs, currently subdivided, but once connected via sandstone arches, will be returned to form one central circulation space.

“Internal openings within the atrium will be re-opened to borrow light and create visual connection between the atrium and apartments.”
