LUXURY Apartments Proposal For Vacant Southside School Makes The Grade With Planners

A PLAN to transform a former school site in Newlands into a luxury housing development has been approved.

Glasgow City planners have given the go-head to an application involving the ex-Calderwood Primary School premises.

CCG Homes will convert the Victorian Calderwood Lodge and replace the 1960s extension with a new-build block.

The sandstone villa will be turned into four flats and one mews house-style property.

A report by planners notes: “Stone cleaning will take place to this element of the development and any repairs shall be carried out with high quality materials to match the original property in design, materials and colour such as timber sash and case windows and natural slate roofing.”

The new-build will have 15 apartments over four floors with the top floor housing two large penthouses.

Planners state: “The proposed new build element will take its massing off the existing school building and is not seen to be overly dominant in the street scene.”

There will be a mix of two and three-bedroom units for private sale.

The planning report continues: “Parking has been concentrated to Beverley Road and the parking court to the south of the building so that generous front gardens can be formed to complement the leafy character of the Newlands Conservation Area.

“The existing corner access (Beverley Road at Calderwood Road) shall be closed off due to safety concerns. A new entrance shall be formed on Beverley Road (8), to facilitate the two parking areas in the least prominent areas of the site.”

The school, in Calderwood Road, closed in June 2017.
