ICONIC East End Restaurant Gets Go-Ahead For New Venue

COIA’S Cafe has been given permission to open a landmark food and drink venue at a major development in Dennistoun.

City planners have agreed that the family-run Italian eatery can use commercial space at a massive flats complex on the corner of Duke Street and Bellgrove Street.

There will be a restaurant, bar and takeaway — including outdoor seating — and a deli food hall.

There will be ground, mezzanine and first levels, with indoor seating for around 100 people.

The proposal originally included a statue on the street outside but this aspect of the plan was later withdrawn.

The latest drawing, submitted last month, for the development, above, which appear to have superseded earlier designs, below, dating from December.

A document submitted with the planning application states: “[There will be] casual dining at counters or at tables with counter displays for food to take away for home cooking and hot food takeaway.

“[There will be a] dedicated takeaway area with fish and chips being the main provision for takeaway. This will also serve to the casual dining area.

“A mezzanine bar with antipasti food will be provided.

“Full accessibility will be provided throughout.

“Main restaurant area and fish and chip takeaway area will be provided with sliding folding doors to open internal area up to external dining / drinking areas.”

Planning officials stated: “The design of the unit largely remains as existing with the addition of new signage and awnings. The design takes into account the modern design of the wider building and is considered to be in keeping with the wider development.”

Coia’s are currently based further along Duke Street.

The development on Duke Street at Bellgrove Street is for Home Group and will have around 250 flats for mid-market rent.
