PERMISSION is being sought to demolish an empty Glasgow hostel and build flats.

Forty-six mix one and two-bedroom apartments would be provided in the six-storey housing association development that would replace Burnbank House at Burnbank Gardens, not far from St George’s Cross.

The flats would be divided evenly between residents of Queens Cross Housing Association and Glasgow West Housing Association.

The site is currently occupied by a Glasgow City Council-owned hostel, which has been vacant for four years.

A design statement included with the planning application explains: “There is a high demand for social rented housing in the area and keen desire within the local community to see the hostel demolished and the site developed.

“Queens Cross Housing Association have worked closely with the architects to develop an innovative approach to delivering a project suitable for all ages with a particular emphasis on the housing needs of elderly residents.

“The design offers opportunities for social interaction and minimises social isolation, all within a highly sustainable building and attractive external environment.”

The application is pending consideration by city planners.
