THE Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation has applied to get Iplanning permission for a statue in central Glasgow renewed.

The foundation previously had consent for a statue of South African campaigner and politician Mandela to be put up in Nelson Mandela Place.

Permission has expired and a new application has now been made and is pending assessment by city planners.

The foundation says it wants to mark Glasgow’s connections to Mandela with a permanent memorial.

It is fundraising for the £150,000 budget and hopes the installation would be completed by early 2022.

An open competition will be held to select the sculptor.
