A PROMINENT site in Calton is being lined up for a residential development.

Wheatley Group is proposing 34 two-bedroom flats and two two ground floor commercial units on a triangular site bounded by Molendinar Street, Spoutmouth and Gallowgate, opposite Barrowland Park.

A design statement submitted with the application explains: “The brownfield site was used as a single level car park which currently acts as an unimpactful and uninspired entrance to the Barras area.

“The site is of huge significance to the Barras area, acting as an entrance and a gateway from the city centre to east end.

“Our proposal is critical in bridging the perceived gap between the two areas and provides huge opportunity do something impactful.”

The statement continues: “It is anticipated that the flats will be let on a mid-market rental basis by Glasgow Housing Association.

“Given similar types of property within the area, they anticipate a demand from young people, predominantly with employment in the city.

“The two commercial units on the corners of the ground floor plan are to provide new business opportunities to the area as well as draw more people to the Barras locale.”

The proposal is pending consideration by Glasgow City planners.
