FLATS Plan For Site Of Ex-Southside Police Station And Pub

6 February, 2021 | Residential

AN apartment block is being proposed for a Pollokshaws site formerly occupied by a pub and a police station.

Wheatley Group want to build 35 flats for mid-market rent in Shawbridge Street.

The three/four-storey building would have 21 two-bedroom units, 12 with one bedroom plus two wheelchair-suitable one-bedroom homes.

The U-shaped block would have a rear landscaped courtyard with amenity space and rain garden.

The land includes where Becketts Pub was and also the former Pollokshaws Police Station, which is currently being demolished.

A statement submitted with the planning application explains that the development has been designed to be “appropriately set within the diverse context of a historic church, mature trees, a recently completed nearby flatted development and a much more substantial housing development which is about to undergo construction on the other side of Shawbridge Street”.

It continues: “Furthermore, scale, choice of materials and the character of the building were to be carefully considered in achieving a unique yet respectful identity which also contributes to a sense of place as it addresses and interrelates with existing contextual elements, be they existing buildings, recently proposed buildings, or indeed substantial open spaces or mature trees, and as it partly encloses its own rear landscaped courtyard.”

The proposal is pending consideration by Glasgow City planning officials.
