A DRIVE-thru coffee shop has been approved at Dalmarnock Trading Estate, at the northern edge of Rutherglen.

South Lanarkshire Council gave the go-ahead for the Starbucks development on vacant land near existing McDonald’s and KFC restaurants across from a Tesco superstore at the former Rutherglen Ropeworks site.

A report by officials states that the site’s owner has extensively marketed for other commercial and industrial uses for over ten years without success.

It continues: “It is argued that this is due to there being an oversupply of industrial land within the area and it is the view that the development of this small site would have a negligible impact on available floor space.”

“The development of this unkempt site would enhance the appearance and amenity of the overall area.

“It is considered that the development of this land, located in close proximity to Dalmarnock Road, would improve the vitality of the area.”
