PLANS to turn a Glasgow South Side bowling club into a community sports and leisure facility with garden have been submitted to the City Council.
Local campaigners want to put an all-weather tennis court and play and fitness area on one of the greens at Mount Florida Bowling Club. The other bowling green would be kept. There would also be gardens, including raised planters for growing food.
Thirty solar panels would be installed on the sloping north side of the property which is between Carmunnock Road and Blairbeth Drive.
The bowling club is understood to be closing this month and residents say the land has been lined up for development.
They formed Mount Florida Community Trust to pursue an award from the Community Land Fund in the hope of taking the site over for the neighbourhood.
The trust state: “As there is no other green space within 400 metres of the site it is imperative that this site is retained for leisure and community usage.”
“It is our intention to re-purpose the clubhouse for community activities and clubs. The bar area we would like to retain for functions and possibly other occasions as a revenue stream; not necessarily for football days at Hampden but this is a possible revenue stream if adequately managed with the surrounding community.
The changes are pending consideration by planners.
